Beyond Imitation

Why Copying Other Great Leaders is Capping Your Impact

Stop Copying

Look around the corporate landscape. A consistent pressure emerges among executives: the desire to conform.

We are taught from day one that climbing the proverbial corporate ladder requires a specific type of armor.

We look at the most vocal leader in the boardroom, the hyper-aggressive founder, or the textbook executive, and we think, “To get there, I have to lead like them.

But trying to squeeze your unique talents into someone else’s leadership mold is exhausting and unsustainable. It’s a fast track to burnout, and worse, it actually places an artificial ceiling on your potential.

In a recent episode of the No More Carbon Copies podcast, author and people-and-culture expert Emily Moses opened up about why so many high-level leaders fall into this exact cycle—and how to break free.

The Constant Battle of Comparison

For many leaders, the journey to the top feels less like a career path and more like a battle.

On one hand, you’re competing for promotions, managing high-stakes projects, and trying to prove your worth to the boardroom.

On the other hand, your inner critic is constantly whispering that you aren’t as qualified, as charismatic, or as good as the person sitting next to you.

This constant comparison creates exhausting internal noise. We feel the need to ignore our unique competencies and mimic whatever "high-performance culture" tells us leadership should look like.

As Emily points out, this pattern catches up to even the most seasoned leaders. At some point, after years of chasing the next achievement, you have to stop and ask yourself:

When is it enough?

When can I just sit back and be okay with who I am?

The Fear of Losing Your Edge

When we talk about leaders embracing who they are and accepting themselves as "enough," a common fear almost always bubbles up, especially for the most driven leaders.

They worry that if they stop being perpetually dissatisfied, they’ll lose their competitive edge. They wear dissatisfaction like a badge of honor, equating discontentment with drive.

But loving who you are and leaning into your unique gifting doesn’t actually reduce your effectiveness; it multiplies it.

When you stop wasting energy pretending to be a carbon copy of some other executive, you free up the ability to actually do your best work. Authenticity doesn't make you soft; it makes you humbly confident.

Finding Your Leadership "Sweet Spot"

True leadership flourishing happens when you step away from the pressure to conform and instead start leading from your Sweet Spot. This is the powerful intersection of three things:

Your Unique Competencies: The skills, perspectives, and aptitudes that you excel at naturally and uniquely.

The Value You Bring: The tangible impact and results you create for your organization, community or team.

Your Joy and Motivation: The environments, activities and ways of leading that actually give you energy, rather than draining you.

Most miserable leaders are good at the first two, but they usually abandon the third.

They are talented performers who provide incredible value, but they lose their edge and their drive because they’re working from someone else’s leadership blueprint.

Step Into Your Own Design

Leadership development isn't about a checklist of traits you acquire so you can build a flawless corporate persona. It’s about stripping away the expectations of who you think you should be, so you can lead from a foundation of who you actually are.

Stop guessing, stop copying, and stop letting comparison cap your potential. The organizations and people you serve don't need another generic leader—they need the leader only you can be.
